Of every golf community on the Eastside, only one has hosted a men's major championship. Sahalee Country Club's tournament pedigree isn't marketing language — it's a matter of record, and it shapes everything about what it means to live in its shadow on the Sammamish Plateau.
"High Heavenly Ground"
Sahalee — Chinook for "High Heavenly Ground" — opened its first 18 holes on August 9, 1969, the vision of members from Inglewood Country Club and Broadmoor Golf Club who wanted Seattle to have another true championship-caliber course. Architect Ted Robinson designed all 27 holes across three nines, and Rees Jones's 1996 renovation prepared the course for the moment that would define it: the 1998 PGA Championship, won by Vijay Singh — the first of his three major titles. That wasn't a one-time honor. Sahalee went on to host the WGC-NEC Invitational in 2002 (won by Craig Parry), the U.S. Senior Open in 2010, and the KPMG Women's PGA Championship in both 2016 and 2024. The club has also run the Sahalee Players Championship, an amateur tournament, continuously since 1992. No other Eastside golf community carries this depth of championship history.
What Living Near a Major Championship Course Is Actually Like
Sahalee sits on the Sammamish Plateau, a setting that trades the lake-adjacent prestige of West Bellevue or Mercer Island for something different: privacy, elevation, and genuine distance from the density of the urban Eastside core. The surrounding residential community was built alongside the course itself, meaning many homes here were designed from the outset with golf course frontage and views in mind, rather than golf access being an afterthought. This is a private club with a membership culture built around golf specifically — Sahalee's own materials describe members who "eat, drink, and breathe golf," and the club is proud of holding the lowest aggregate handicap index average in the Pacific Northwest. That's a meaningfully different social culture than a club where golf is one amenity among many. Buyers drawn to serious, golf-first community life tend to find Sahalee a strong fit; buyers looking for a broader social or family-amenity package (pools, tennis, extensive dining) may find other Eastside clubs a better match. The Sammamish Plateau more broadly offers the Lake Washington and Issaquah school districts depending on exact location, along with a quieter, more residential feel than closer-in Eastside communities — a genuine trade-off worth weighing against the added drive time to downtown Bellevue or Seattle.
Considering the Sammamish Plateau?
Sahalee's membership and market are genuinely distinct from the rest of the Eastside's golf communities. For the full comparison against the other 16, my complete Eastside golf course homes guide has the details.
